Honest Review: East Bay Beachfront Club Level Room (BC)
All-Inclusive Expert Susie Christensen has personally visited every Sandals and Beaches resort including Sandals Royal Bahamian (multiple times). She knows the resort inside and out. She stayed in the East Bay Beachfront Club Level Room on her latest stay and shared her honest review of the room. You can ask her questions directly below.
Where is the East Bay Beachfront Club Level Room located, and what’s the view like?
Susie C: The room is located in the East Bay Village. There are three villages at this resort, but the two main ones are the East Bay and the West Bay. The East Bay rooms face the ocean, so they’re the most direct oceanfront rooms on the property, and this room is on the second, third, and fourth floors of the East Bay building. One of the benefits of using a Travel Advisor like myself is that I can request floors, so for my clients I always request the highest floor available in the category they’ve picked. It’s not guaranteed, but because we sell a lot of Sandals, the resort is pretty good about honoring our requests when they can. My husband and I were on the top floor, the fourth floor, and we could look out and see the ocean for miles, just the beautiful neon turquoise water going on forever.
You can see the overwater chapel, which was right below us, and part of the beach. The swim-out rooms are on the first floor of that building, so you can look right down off the balcony and see the big pools with the Sandals logo in the bottom. Anytime there was a wedding, we’d sit on our balcony and watch it progress down to the chapel and then come back out. That part of the beach is fairly quiet, so sometimes we’d just walk right out of our building onto the beach and stay there for the day. It’s a perfect location.
What else is visible from the balcony?
Susie C: I have a beautiful picture looking out where you can see a sailboat going right across in front of where our room was. You can see the private island out there as well. You can’t make out all the details of it, but you can see where it is, and you can also see Gordon’s, the restaurant out on the pier.
What’s the room like inside?
Susie C: You walk into the room and there’s a long hallway, and just to the right at the end of it is the bathroom. The cool thing about the bathroom is that when you first walk in, there’s a sink and counter space with towels underneath. Then there’s a pocket door, and when you go through it there’s another sink, and that’s where the shower and powder room are. So you’ve got two separate sinks, which worked really well, I had my own sink and my husband had his own. They both had shelves underneath for storage, so I could put all my things down there, my blow dryer, curling iron, and so on, and he had his own storage under his sink too.
There’s a beautiful shower with a lighted tile inlay in the middle, which is really nice. There’s no bathtub, but it’s a huge shower with just a half-partition glass separating it from the room, so it’s pretty wide open. Then you walk into the bedroom. These rooms have all been refurbished, and they’ve picked two color palettes for the new rooms in this building, a light pink and a light blue, which complement the beautiful turquoise water you see right outside. When you walk through the room and look out the sliding door, there are those turquoise blue waters. The room has the safe, the refrigerator, and a nice big TV, plus a little chair to sit in, a desk where I set up my laptop, and a beautiful balcony.
Are drinks free at Sandals Royal Bahamian?
Susie C: Of course around the resort, all bars, restaurants, and in-room drinks are included. They don’t skimp on them either, they’ll give you what you want. There are three levels of rooms at Sandals. There’s the luxury level, where you have beer, wine, soft drinks, water, and juices stocked. Then there’s the club level, which is a bit of an upgraded room type. On club level you also get the hard liquor, a bourbon, vodka, rum, and gin, plus sparkling wine and red wine, along with the beer, wine, water, juices, and soft drinks in the refrigerator. Club level also includes room service from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
You also have a concierge lounge, so if you need anything during your stay, you just call the lounge or stop by. They’ll help you make dinner reservations or with anything you need for your room, and while they restock once a day, if you need extra, they’ll take care of it. That’s also where you check in and check out. It’s a really nice space, if you just want to hang out in the air conditioning you can, and there’s a lending library where you can leave a book or take a book, games to play, and snacks. In the morning they have pastries, and they always have drinks, including their signature drink, which they serve when you first arrive, but you can go back anytime during your stay for another, or for a glass of champagne if you’d like. The people who work in there are amazing, they go out of their way to help with whatever you need, even things like your checkout, your flight, or printing your boarding pass.
It’s also fun to go down to the lounge and sit somewhere you can talk to other people. They have a TV going at all times and updated flight information, so you can check on your flight. When we check out, our flight often isn’t until later, and we don’t want to get all hot and sweaty waiting around for our transportation, so we’ll go sit in the club lounge where it’s air conditioned, have a drink, and keep an eye on our flight. We just tell them we’re in the club lounge, and they come get us when our transport arrives.
What happens when you arrive at the airport in Nassau with a Sandals reservation?
Susie C: Once you get off your plane and through customs, you look for the Sandals lounge area. You go up to the desk, and there are people waiting for you, they’ll see you coming and practically run to you, take your luggage and belongings, tag everything, and tell you they’ll handle everything. They call your transportation and set it all up. Depending on your room level, if you’re butler level you get a Rolls Royce or Mercedes-Benz private transfer, which is very nice. If you’re club level or luxury level, you go on a shuttle. They’re small shuttles, and depending on how many people arrive around the same time, they get you right on and over to the resort. They handle your luggage all the way through, so once you’re on the other side you just point out your bags to confirm they arrived, and they keep track of them and deliver them to your room.
And how do you find your way to your room once you’ve checked in, is it hard to navigate the resort?
Susie C: When you go to the Club Sandals Lounge, they get you checked in and walk you to your room. Once you’re there, they give you a little tour, show you the amenities, the thermostat, how the sliding door has to be closed for the air conditioning to work, and answer any questions, and then they leave you in your room.
What else did you like about this part of the resort?
Susie C: One of the most beautiful spots is at the very top of this building, where the gym is located, and it’s a fairly large gym. The treadmills face the windows, so while you work out you can look right out onto the ocean. It’s air conditioned up there, and here’s a little secret we discovered: there are two small balconies on the outside of the gym. We’d go up there at sunset, out on the west side, and hang out. They’re very small, but you can sit out there, and it’s the most beautiful view for the sunset. We’d get a drink, take it up to that little balcony, and watch the sunset, and there’s hardly ever anyone up there, so you have the whole place to yourself. It was like a private little outdoor viewing area, perfect for the sunset.
Is the fitness center open 24-7?
Susie C: It is, 24-7. They have towels, usually a container of iced lemon water for people working out, and any equipment you could ever want. There’s even a scale, so you can keep track of how much you’re eating on your trip. I try to get on it first thing when I arrive so I have a baseline, and then I watch as the days go by and the desserts add up. If it starts getting out of control, I might back down from three desserts a meal to one!
What about the restaurants at Sandals Royal Bahamian. Are they easy to get to, and which are your favorites?
Susie C: The restaurants are amazing at this resort. It’s not a huge resort, so it’s pretty easy to get around to any of them, and we’ve been to all of them. One of our favorites is Gordon’s on the Pier, and I have a pretty funny story about it. It’s resort casual and you don’t need reservations. We’d go early, the first seating is at 5:30, and it’s a beautiful place to watch the sunset, you can request to be seated on the side where the sun sets. We went in and had surf and turf. I prefer the surf over the beef, so I had two lobsters, and my husband had a lobster and a steak. It was so good that he ordered a second entree, so he had two steaks and two lobsters, and I had a third lobster tail. When the waitress asked about dessert, I asked for the little sampler platter, and my husband said he’d have another surf and turf. She brought them, and he ended up with three surf and turfs. He was living life large and was so happy to have another surf and turf instead of dessert.
Another favorite is Butch’s Chop House, which everyone loves. It requires reservations and it’s very popular, so it can be hard to get into, though we’ve never had a problem. One thing I recommend to my clients is that the day they arrive and check in, once they have a room number, they make their dinner reservations at the concierge lounge, because the popular restaurants do book up. If you have a butler, they’ll make those reservations for you ahead of time, and you can always change them later if you’d rather eat somewhere else. The French restaurant, La Plume, is amazing and also requires reservations, and both Butch’s and La Plume suggest men wear long pants, though they’re getting a little more casual about it, but it’s worth bringing a pair just in case.
Soy is another of our favorites. We ate there probably three times, we usually do about three times on a week trip because the food is so amazing. Sometimes we’ll go there for an appetizer, then head to another restaurant for the main course, and if we’re not hungry for dessert, we’ll walk around, watch some entertainment, and finish the night at the food truck with sweets. They make the best crepes, cookies, and specialty coffees. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of them, even the Italian restaurant is amazing.
Tell us more about the private island. Is it hard to get to?
Susie C: The private island is awesome, and it’s very popular. There’s a restaurant out there called Aralia House, a seaside grill with Caribbean seafood, and the food is amazing. They do lunch a la carte from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., so while you’re hanging out at the pool or the beach, you can drop in for lunch, and you can even take it back to your beach spot to eat there.
The boats start running out to the island about 10 in the morning, and people start lining up around 9. The first time we went, we made sure to be on the first boat so we could get out there and grab the best spots. But there are so many spots that you really don’t have to worry. What we do now is wait for that first big crowd to get through, since the boats run back and forth every few minutes at first, and then we head over, and you can still find amazing places to sit. It’s never so crowded that there’s nowhere to rest for the day.
The cool thing about the island is the little cabanas at the pool. Normally those are reserved for butler clients, but not on the island, out there anyone can have them, first come, first served. Sometimes we’ll sit at the pool, which is a blast, and other times, if we want more privacy, we’ll grab a little cabana over on the beach. There’s a pool, a bar, and lots of little beach coves, plus very good snorkeling. If you go to the back side of the island with your own snorkel gear, there’s a little cove where you can snorkel out toward the rocks and see all kinds of amazing fish.
If you don’t have your own snorkel gear, does Sandals provide it?
Susie C: Yes. You can get gear on the back side of the island at the Aqua Shack if you don’t have your own. It’s quick and easy, you just give them a room number and you’re done.
What about the Red Lane Spa?
Susie C: The Red Lane Spa is awesome too. They’ve got a steam room and a sauna that anyone can use, you don’t even have to be getting a massage. And they have all the services you’d expect, couples massages, solo massages, nails, hair, makeup, even haircuts and facials, and for women who are expecting, they’ll do a maternity massage. There are all kinds of options you can book through the spa. The therapists are amazing, and you can’t miss them, they’ll come around wherever you are and ask if you’d like to set up a reservation, which are fairly easy to get. There’s even a spa on the private island, so you can get a massage right on the beach.
Is Sandals Royal Bahamian a good resort?
Susie C: Oh, absolutely. In fact, if I could pick any room on that resort, this would be the one I’d pick, because we’re all about the view, and the view here is so spectacular. Every afternoon we’d go back to our room and sit out on the patio before getting ready for dinner. We didn’t have a butler in this room, so we’d bring something up ourselves or order room service, and we’d have champagne and a little happy hour with some shrimp or a snack, sit out on the balcony in our robes, and watch the sunset before we showered for dinner. Because the view is so spectacular, we spent a ton of time out on that balcony just enjoying it.
The other thing that’s really cool about this room is that it faces directly beachfront. On the west side there are a few beachfront rooms, but most of them are angled, so you get a side view of the ocean because the building runs perpendicular to it. These front rooms are straight beach view, front-facing, which are my favorite rooms at any resort. Honestly, I would take this room over a butler suite with a side view of the ocean any day, it’s that much better of a view.
Since you don’t have a butler, how do you make a room service order?
Susie C: You just pick up the phone in your room. There’s a button for room service that goes directly to them, you tell them what you want, and they deliver it. It usually takes about an hour, so since we’ve done it so many times, we plan accordingly. When we get back to the room, we’ll put the order in, then put our things away, change into our robes, and pour the drinks, and by then the snacks have usually arrived. The club lounge is nice for this too, they have pastries in the morning and little finger sandwiches in the afternoon, so you can go down and take some up to your room if you’d like.
Who would you say this room and resort are best for?
Susie C: I’ve seen all age levels there. I’ve seen retired people, young couples getting away from their kids because it’s such a short distance back and forth, they’re not too far from the US, and of course a lot of honeymooners. One of the things I love is how quick and easy it is to get to. It’s only about a 40-minute flight from Miami, so you can be there in no time, and on the way home you actually clear customs right there in Nassau before you fly back, which makes the return really easy.
One honest thing I tell my clients about is the weather. If you’re going in the winter months and you’re looking for bright sun, 84 degrees, and all the pools open, this might not be your resort. It can be cooler then, more like Florida weather, with daytime temperatures in the low to mid 70s and 60s at night. But the rest of the year, it’s perfect. So it just depends on what you’re looking for and when you like to travel.
Is there anything to do just off the resort?
Susie C: There is. It’s a great resort if you’re a golfer. The green fees aren’t included here, like at some of the other Sandals, but there’s a beautiful course just a short distance away at Royal Blue. You can set up tee times, jump in a taxi that takes you over, and they’ll take great care of you while you’re there. There is a charge for it, but a lot of clients love that it’s so close. There’s also a casino not even a five-minute ride away. A lot of clients want a casino when they’re on vacation, so we’ve hopped in a taxi, gone down, hung out, checked it out, lost a little money, and taken the cab back. Some people actually walk it, it’s that close, and the cab ride is easy and not very expensive.
What about off-resort excursions?
Susie C: There are plenty of excursions, and the water is so beautiful I could go out on a boat and just look at it all day. A lot of them are speedboat trips where you can go swim with the pigs, visit the iguana island, or snorkel over the sunken baby grand piano. You can also go to the cave where a James Bond movie was filmed and snorkel inside it. When we were snorkeling in there, there was actually a shark sitting on the bottom, and we didn’t know it until we got out, which was probably just as well. He just sat there and didn’t bother us at all.
We’ve also swum with sharks in the Bahamas. The excursion takes you to an area where they feed them, and you can get in the water with them, swim with them, even hold them, which I did. They’re full grown, but they come in all around you and they’re very docile. It’s quite an experience.
Is Sandals Royal Bahamian worth it?
Susie C: There really aren’t very many luxury all-inclusive resorts in this area, very few. Most of the big resorts down there, like Baha Mar and Atlantis, are not all-inclusive. So the price you see when you’re researching those doesn’t include your drinks, your food, or half of the amenities. Sandals has so much included. The snorkeling is included, diving is included if you’re PADI certified, and you can paddleboard, sail, and do all the land sports, basketball, pool, ping pong, tennis, and pickleball, which is huge right now. You’ve got the gym, all the entertainment, and everything you could want, and it’s all included with any room. When you add it all up, the value is really wonderful.
