The 1SUP is one of the standout room types at Sandals Royal Barbados, sitting on the ground floor of the Wahoo and Sand Dollar buildings in the Seaside Village, with your patio stepping directly into the Crystal Lagoon river pool. Inside there’s a full one-bedroom layout with a separate living room, king-size bed, fully stocked bar with premium liquors, and a spa-style bathroom with double vanity and walk-in shower. Butler service and 24-hour in-room dining are included, along with a Tranquility Soaking Tub on the patio and VIP check-in.
One thing worth knowing upfront: Sandals Royal Barbados and the adjacent Sandals Barbados operate as a single stay-at-one-play-at-two resort, meaning you have access to both properties, their restaurants, pools, and entertainment, all included. There’s no cost to work with us at Creative Travel Brands, we’ll watch the price after you book, and if it drops we’ll get you the lower rate. Read on for Carol’s full review.
All-Inclusive Expert Carol Garton has spent extensive time at Sandals Royal Barbados. She recently stayed in the Crystal Lagoon Swim-Up 1BR Butler Suite and shared her honest thoughts below. The walkthrough video above is from her stay.
You stayed in the 1SUP at Sandals Royal Barbados. Where is it located on the property and what were your first impressions?
Carol G: It’s in the Sand Dollar building, which is in the Seaside Village, and it’s only a few steps to the large infinity pool and the beach. When you walk in it’s just light and cheerful, very modern tropical design. Very large and open feeling. It really is a lovely room. And one thing I want to mention right away is that the Sand Dollar building is really close to Sandals Barbados next door, so we could literally just walk out our back door into the other resort. More pools, more restaurants, more entertainment, all just right there.
Walk us through the room itself.
Carol G: The bedroom has a king-size bed with a writing desk and chair, and a bench at the end of the bed. One thing I really appreciated was the reading lights on each side of the bed. I’m a reader, and that’s something I always look for. The minibar is stocked with beer, premium liquor, your choice of drinks. The bathroom is well-appointed, double sinks, a rain shower, separate private toilet area, and the vanity has a separate makeup mirror with lights. Red Lane Spa toiletries throughout. Then the living area has a comfy sofa, chair, ottoman, coffee table, and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open right out to the patio and the pool.
And the patio?
Carol G: The patio is beautifully set up. Double padded lounge chairs, table and chairs for dining, and two padded lounge chairs that sit right in the shallow area of the water so you can be in the pool and still be comfortable. There’s also a huge soaking tub which I really enjoyed. Curtains for privacy. And the step down into the Crystal Lagoon swim-up pool has a railing, so you don’t have to jump right in, ha. It feels very private out there, you really can’t see your neighbor with all the vegetation between the rooms unless you or they are out in the pool somewhere.
You mentioned some things people should know before booking. What are the honest concerns?
Carol G: I wouldn’t call them concerns exactly, but things to know going in. It’s a very popular resort with a strong British audience, true to the island’s history, so we had to book pretty far out to get the room we wanted and these swim-up rooms, there aren’t very many of them at all, so they book up fast. If you plan ahead you should be good but if you’re looking last minute you might be out of luck. IF that’s the case, reach out to us and we can help you find a different swim-up or another room that you’ll love, we know which ones are comparable and in the same price range whether at Sandals Royal Barbados or the Sandals next door or another resort altogether just reach out and we can help.
What else do you tell your clients before booking at Sandals Royal Barbados?
Carol G:The water can be rough sometimes and difficult to swim in the ocean, so your excursions will take you out a ways from the resort to a calmer area if you want to snorkel or fish. It’s not far, but it’s something to be aware of. It also gets windy at times so sailing doesn’t happen every day, but if you haven’t learned how to sail the staff will actually take you out and give you a lesson, which is a really nice touch. And depending on the time of year the rain can come through quickly. For us that was actually fun because we just went and had a beer, caught some live entertainment, went bowling. But if you’re counting on beach days every day, just know that’s the nature of the Caribbean. Most of the showers go through so quickly though, so it’s rarely an issue.
Anything else about Sandals Royal Barbados that stands out as a resort?
Carol G: A few things that I think are really worth mentioning. The resort has the largest glass-fronted infinity pool in the Eastern Caribbean, which is just stunning. There’s also a rooftop restaurant and a cantilever rooftop bar and pool overlooking the ocean, which is a really unique experience you don’t find at most Sandals properties. And the airport is only 15 minutes away, which sounds small but makes a real difference, especially on travel days. You’re not sitting in a bus for 90 minutes after a long flight. You’re at the resort very quickly, and that sets the tone for the whole trip.
