All-Inclusive Expert Susie Christensen has stayed at Sandals Dunn’s River multiple times and knows this resort inside and out. Today she’s sharing her honest take on the Tufa Terrace Swim-Up One Bedroom Butler Suite (room code TSUP), including whether it’s worth the price, how to get the best price, how it compares to the Tufa Terrace Sky Pool rooms, and who this room is really best for. Watch the video from her stay here and see her review below. You can also message her directly with any questions of your own!
The Tufa Terrace Swim-Up Butler Suites sit on the ground floor of two buildings at Sandals Dunn’s River, centrally located on the resort with step-out access into a swim-up pool shared with just a handful of neighboring suites. Inside you get a full one-bedroom layout, king-size bed, premium wet bar stocked however you want it, and a spa-style bathroom with soaking tub and walk-in rain shower. Outside, the covered patio has a Tranquility Soaking Tub for two and lounge chairs right at the water’s edge. 24-hour butler service is included.
If you’re also considering the Tufa Terrace Sky Pool Butler Suite (TSKY), which has a private infinity pool on the balcony instead of the swim-up, we touch on that throughout this review as well.
All-Inclusive Expert Susie Christensen has personally visited every Sandals and Beaches resort and has spent extensive time over multiple visits at Sandals Dunn’s River. She took time to give us her honest take on the TSUP rooms (and how they compare to TSKY). The walkthrough video above is from her stay.
You’ve stayed at Sandals Dunn’s River several times. What’s your first impression when you walk into the Tufa Terrace Swim-Up Butler Suite?
Susie C: The room is amazing. When you first walk in you have the wet bar area right there, and in this room you can have premium alcohol, so anything available at the resort the butlers can bring to you and have it stocked how you want. We like coconut rum for afternoon drinks and rum cream for coffee in the morning. Then as you come further into the room there’s the king-size bed, very comfortable, and there’s a pillow menu so you can pick whatever works for you. If it still doesn’t feel right when you get there, just tell your butler and they’ll sort it out. There’s a sitting area that sort of faces out toward the swim-up, either a big L-shaped couch or a lounger-bed type couch depending on the room. TV that angles so you can watch from the bed or the living area. And a little writing desk if you need it.
Wait, a pillow menu?
Susie C: All Sandals have pillow menus, especially in the butler-level rooms. If you want a softer pillow, a more firm pillow, you can pick what you want and they’ll have it in your room on arrival. If it still doesn’t work when you get there, tell your butlers and they’ll bring you something that does.
Tell us about the bathroom and the rest of the suite.
Susie C: The bathroom is very spacious. They have a soaking tub in the bathroom, as well as the soaking tub out on the patio. And huge showers. Double sink, split mirror. There’s a storage area for luggage, for hanging clothes. Everything is really modern, accent lighting kind of hidden under the ledges that makes it look really classy. Light wood tones, stone, glass shower with the rain shower head. And the toiletries are all high-end… shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and they also provide bath bombs for the big tubs. Sandals is moving to the bigger bottles in the shower now but same Red Lane Spa product. Some resorts have already switched.
Red Lane Spa toiletries, is that something people actually care about?
Susie C: People reallllyyyy like them. I’ve actually seen people bring bottles home and then sell them online. I wouldn’t recommend that, but it’s a popular product. The good news is now that they’re going to the bigger bottles it’ll be easier to use as much as you want while you’re there.
The swim-up patio is really what we all care about here. What’s it like?
Susie C: The patio sits back a little, it’s kind of recessed in, so it’s actually pretty private. It’s also covered, so if it rains you can still be out there, have a meal, just hang out. There’s a table and two chairs, the butlers will bring you anything you want out there, meals from any restaurant at the resort, set it all up on your private table. There’s the soaking tub for two, curtains you can draw if you want even more privacy. Then as you step into the pool there are two lounge chairs just barely out of the water, so you can sit on those and relax or drop down into the swim-up. Little walls on each side give you privacy from your neighbors. We preferred to use the pool mainly in the afternoons and evenings. Go to the beach in the morning, butlers have your chairs reserved with a cooler, whatever you want to drink. We usually have breakfast down on the beach, maybe lunch too. Then in the afternoon when it starts getting warmer we come back to the Tufa Terrace Swim-Up Suite, order appetizers. Our favorite is coconut shrimp and shrimp cocktail. They’ll also bring a charcuterie board, chill the champagne. Spend the late afternoon in the pool, watch the sunset, then get ready for dinner. Perfect day, really.
How private is the swim-up pool area really?
Susie C: It’s more private than you’d think. You have the little walls between you and your neighbors on each side, and when we stay in swim-ups we very rarely see a lot of other people in the pool at the same time we are. It doesn’t get crowded, you don’t really get people wandering in from other parts of the resort. But if you want to interact with people, you can. A lot of people will have a happy hour and if they’re traveling in a group they’ll have everyone come to one patio and have their own little private party. It’s a great setup if you’re traveling with another couple. Even if they’re not in the same room type they can kind of utilize the space sometimes. And if there’s a quick rain shower, you’re on a covered patio so you can just stay out there. The rain never really lasts very long anyway, usually just a quick five minutes, and then it’s nice and peaceful out there while it’s coming down.
Any tips on getting the best room in the building?
Susie C: Some of the rooms have better views than others. The ones toward the end might have more of an ocean view, some toward the middle more of a pool view. All the views are nice, but if you book with me I can tell you which ones are best and request whichever you prefer. Requests aren’t guaranteed, but they’re pretty good about honoring them since we’re one of the top Sandals travel agencies. I also know the sales manager at this resort very well, and before you arrive I send a letter letting them know we have VIP guests coming, and I request the best rooms.
What about the noise level? These rooms are centrally located and right near the main pool.
Susie C: You can hear some of the goings-on at the main pool during the day, which is right past your swim-up area. It’s not bad though, and when you shut your patio doors it blocks out a lot of it. If you wanted to take a nap you could definitely do that. It never goes too late either, they have cutoff times. And the entertainment moves around depending on what day it is, so if there’s something near your room one night it might be somewhere completely different the next. Most of the evening entertainment is actually on the other side of the resort anyway. And like I said, if quiet is really important to you, I can request the building that’s further away. Or we can also talk about the Rondovals. If you want to be in the middle of the action, I can request those rooms for you too.
What would you tell someone who is comparing these to the TSKY rooms? How does it compare to the Tufa Terrace Swim-Up Suite, and how do you choose between them?
Susie C: So the TSKY rooms (Tufa Terrace One Bedroom Skypool Butler Suite w/ Balcony Tranquility Soaking Tub) are on the second, third, and fourth floors of the same Tufa Terrace buildings, and they have their own private infinity pool on the balcony instead of the swim-up. I prefer the higher floors just because the views are better up there. There are elevators in the building so no problem with stairs. You can sit in your private pool and look out over the main pool, and then just past that is the ocean. We love to sit in that pool at night and have champagne and watch the sunset. The views are really spectacular from up there.
So which one would you recommend?
Susie C: It depends on what you’re looking for. The TSUP and TSKY are the same price, so it really comes down to the pool experience. The swim-up has more of a social element, you’re at ground level, you can interact with neighbors if you want, it has that fun communal vibe. The TSKY is more private, you’re up higher, the views are better, and you’ve got your own pool that nobody else is in. If privacy and views are your top priorities I’d lean toward the TSKY. If you like the idea of the swim-up experience and being at ground level, the TSUP is great. Availability is also a factor since there are more TSKY rooms across three floors versus just the ground floor for the TSUP. We have a full page on the TSKY too if you want to dig into that one more.
Where does the Tufa Terrace Swim-Up Suite sit pricewise at Sandals Dunn’s River, and is it worth it?
Susie C: It’s near the top. The only room above it is the Coyaba Sky Villas, which is the Rondoval bungalows with the private pool sanctuary. Maybe the Mammee Bay Oceanviews, but basically everything else at Dunn’s is below. The TSUP and TSKY are the same price, which I think is interesting because you’re really just choosing between the swim-up experience and a private pool up high with better views. We’re seeing rates from around $1,920 up to about $2,360 per night per couple in 2026, most dates are falling somewhere in that $1,900-$2,000 range. December gets toward the top. If you have some flexibility let me know and I can find the dates with the lowest rates, I will do that research for you so you don’t have to click the calendars over and over again.
Worth it? I think so, yeah. I’ve stayed there multiple times and keep going back, that says something. The butler experience alone is worth a lot. You’re not just getting a nice room with your own semi private or private pool… you’re getting a whole different level of service that just makes everything easier and more special. Ultimate relaxation. And that patio, that swim-up, the soaking tub, champagne in the afternoon watching the sunset. I mean. It’s pretty hard to beat. I’ve been to every Sandals resort and stayed in a ton of different rooms and I can definitely say this is one of my all time favorites, my husband agrees.
Tell us about Sandals Dunn’s River as a resort. What do people need to know going in?
Susie C: It’s just a beautiful resort and one of my favorites in the whole portfolio. The mountains behind it are gorgeous, completely different view from the backside than the front. The beach is really good, warm water, clear, calm, I’ve never felt like it was rough when I’ve been there. And one of my favorite things about Dunn’s is that there are chairs kind of between the pools and the beach so if one of you wants to be at the pool and one wants to be at the beach you can kind of set up in the middle and have both, or you can go back and forth, the layout there is so nice!
There are five pools and two river pools, pickleball, scuba for certified divers, sailing, kayaking, paddleboards, snorkeling right from the beach. Though, the snorkeling off the beach isn’t amazing or anything, but the snorkeling excursions which are included will take you out on a boat to the good areas.
Oh and the Rum Club. We LOVE the rum club, maybe a little too much… it’s just one of those things that makes this resort feel really special and different. Fire pits, rare rums you can sample all night, bartenders that are genuinely fun to hang out with. I always end up there at least once or twice per stay. They have flights with really expensive bottles of rum from all over the Caribbean that you can sample, they have entertainment, DJs and music pretty much every night. It feels classy in there but also relaxed and casual and fun.
What about getting there from the airport?
Susie C: So there are two options. If you can get a flight into the Ocho Rios airport, OCJ, I highly recommend it. It’s only about 20 to 30 minutes to the resort depending on traffic, it’s a smaller airport, really quick to get through. There’s one daily flight from Miami right now. Most people still fly into Montego Bay which is about 90 minutes, it’s a straight highway though, not windy mountain roads or anything, and they usually stop halfway for a bathroom break where you can also grab some local jerk chicken if you want. Private transfers are also an option and reasonably priced. I can help you figure out the best flights from wherever you’re coming from.
Who is the Tufa Terrace Swim-Up Butler Suite best for, and is there anyone you’d steer away from it?
Susie C: I’d recommend it to anyone who really loves being in the water. Because when that pool is just right there, you end up swimming so much more than you normally would. You roll out of bed, you’re in the pool. You come back from the beach in the afternoon, you’re in the pool. After dinner, lights in the pool, you’re back in the pool. It’s just that easy. Really great for couples celebrating something, honeymoon, anniversary, birthday. And honestly great for groups of couples too, the social aspect of the swim-up is really fun when you’ve got people you know in the neighboring rooms. But if having a fully private pool is really important to you, I’d point you toward the TSKY instead, same price, same room, just up higher with better views and nobody else in your pool. And if the butler suite price point is a stretch, there are some really good rooms at Sandals Dunn’s River at lower price points that I’d be happy to talk through. Just reach out and we can figure out what makes the most sense for your trip and your budget!
