The Mammee Bay Oceanview One Bedroom Butler Suite (room code O1B), is located in the Mammee Bay building at Sandals Dunn’s River, on Jamaica’s north coast. The suite’s two private balconies overlook the ocean, tropical gardens, and the resort’s active pool. What made you choose Sandals Dunn’s River for this trip?

Carol G: We booked this room because it was a special occasion, a big birthday for me, and it was a great opportunity to visit Sandals Dunn’s River first before heading to another Sandals resort for the rest of our vacation. We stayed at this resort for a few days, and then moved on to stay in an Overwater Villa at Sandals Royal Caribbean. Both were great experiences. But I love Sandals Dunn’s River because it’s on the north coast of Jamaica, only about an hour and a half from the airport if you fly into Montego Bay. There’s also a smaller airport, Ian Fleming International, that’s only about 30 minutes away. It’s a newer resort, and I hadn’t been before, so I was very excited to experience it. I thought it was absolutely stunning.

One thing I’d add that makes Sandals Dunn’s River so special is that it’s a “stay at one, play at two” resort. You can stay at Sandals Dunn’s River and also take a shuttle over to Sandals Ochi to see what it’s like, have dinner there, spend time on the beach, whatever you want. That makes it really fun and unique.

What’s the Mammee Bay Oceanview One Bedroom Butler Suite actually like beyond the pictures?

Carol G: We enjoyed staying in the room. It had a wonderful ocean view, and you could see the active pool and the tropical gardens too. We were on the second floor, but there are higher up versions of this room too, and the room itself is absolutely exquisite. And it was a butler room. It has two balconies, which for me was really cool, it feels like it adds so much space to a room when you’re in one of the larger buildings like the Mammee Bay building. One balcony had a soaking tub for two that was actually very secluded, with a curtain you could pull for more privacy, and there was a palm tree very close by, since we were on the second floor, so it gave us a lot more privacy, which is something a lot of people ask about. The other balcony had a small bistro table with two chairs, where you could eat or have a drink. We’d have our butler set up appetizers before dinner so it was waiting when we came back from the beach to get ready. You had a nice view of the ocean and the pool from both. You’re pretty close to the ocean too in many of these, we can help you get the best ones for what you’re looking for.

The interior is very large and airy. Plenty of room, it doesn’t feel like a cramped hotel room where you’re tripping over your suitcases or anything like that. There’s a separate bedroom, obviously, which is nice to have, with a king-size bed, a large TV, and a sofa, so you had a place to sit and read or relax. It had a dresser, a very large closet with a safe, and a desk, plus a bench at the end of the bed. The bedroom opened onto the second balcony with the table and chairs. Then you move into the living room, which was very well appointed, with wood accents on the wall and a lot of plush blue and white seating, two chairs, a footstool, a coffee table, a small dining table, and another TV. The living room has the balcony with the outdoor soaking tub. Our butlers had it set up for us one evening, filled it with warm water and sprinkled rose petals in it, a very nice surprise when we came back to our room.

Then there’s a huge spa-style bathroom, which to me was just very luxurious. It had a walk-in shower and another large Tranquility Soaking Tub. The interesting thing about this tub was that it sat in the middle of the bathroom, with vanities on each side, the shower behind it, and the toilet area enclosed behind that. It made the room very unique and classy. The hairdryer is wonderful, so you don’t have to pack one, haha. And you get Red Lane Spa shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, and it smells amazing, so you really don’t have to pack that either.

There’s also a comfy robe and slippers in the closet, which I enjoy after a swim in the ocean or the pool, so you can just sit and get warm afterward. One thing a lot of people don’t know is that Sandals offers a laundry service, so if you don’t want to pack heavy, you don’t have to. It is costly, but if you do need something laundered, they’ll take care of it for you. Your butlers will handle it.

What’s it like having a butler at an all-inclusive resort like Sandals Dunn’s River?

Carol G: We always get to know the butlers, they’re always amazing. We had two different butlers, one during the day and one during the evening. They’re not there 24 hours, they work about 8-hour shifts, one in the morning and one until about 10 at night. And anytime your personal butlers aren’t on, you can still call 24-hour butler service and the ones on duty will bring food to you or whatever you need. They make sure your room is fully stocked, the fridge with juices, soda, water, sparkling wine, pretty much any wine or beer you want, and premium liquor is always included.

The butlers meet you when you first arrive and check you in, walk you to your room show you around the resort if you want, which to me is really important, because every resort is different, so it’s nice to have someone show you where all the restaurants are, where the pools are, where the spa and the workout room are, which part of the beach is best during the day, and where the entertainment will be at night, and even things to do off the resort. They give you a lot of great information up front.

They’ll also talk with you about where you’d like to eat, the types of food you like, and whether you want snacks in the afternoon or drinks at the pool or beach. They kind of make a rough outline of a plan with you… figure out what you like what your vacation style is so you won’t miss out on reservations at the restaurants that are important to you and such. They will find out what drinks and snacks you like what you want stocked and ready when you come back to your room. Stuff like that. Then they’ll kind of ask your tentative plans for the next day each afternoon or evening so they can have pool or beach chairs reserved for you with a cooler and your drinks of choice.

We like a light snack in the afternoon, like shrimp or cookies, and they’ll bring it to you wherever you are. If you ask, they’ll bring you lunch from one of the restaurants to wherever you are. I’ll usually have them book a massage for me when I arrive. They’re there to make your trip more exciting, easy, and relaxing.

And they won’t be in your way either. They give you a phone, and they’ll call you or you call them if you need something, but they’re not hanging around you the whole time. People worry the butlers are going to be in their room all the time, or that it’ll be awkward… but they’re not. They’re all so fun and energetic and personable. I always really enjoy that they’ll get us a reservation at a restaurant we maybe couldn’t have gotten into, and they take us over like VIPs, sit you down, pour your wine or drink, and make sure you’re happy before they go on with their evening. The butlers have always been very helpful, never in our way, and always there when you need them. We’ve always had good experiences.

Where does this room fall price-wise at Sandals Dunn’s River?

Carol G: It’s definitely not the highest end room, but it’s not entry-level either, it’s right in that nice middle ground. Rates on this one run somewhere between about $1,500 and $1,940 a night for two people, most of our clients end up on the lower end of that. So it’s still a splurge for most people, don’t get me wrong, but compared to something like the Sky Villa, it’s a lot more attainable. You’re getting a full butler suite, two balconies, two soaking tubs, full size separate room, for a price that’s not as intimidating as some of the top categories here. It still feels like a spacious modern apartment as opposed to just a hotel room. I think that’s part of why I loved it so much, it felt like a real treat without going overboard.

Where’s the Mammee Bay building located on the resort?

Carol G: It’s located along the front of the resort on the left if you’re facing the ocean, it’s facing the beach and the active pool, so you’re right up against the ocean, which is great. You’re just a few steps away from the water and a few steps to the pool. It’s one of the best locations on the whole resort, I think.

One thing to know is that some of these O1B rooms that are on the lower levels and set back away from the ocean aren’t as good of a view as others. There is a rooftop of a common-area building right below your balcony, then some rooftop in your line of sight before you get to the ocean view. You can still definitely see the ocean, so if you book with us we can make sure to request the room numbers that are closer and higher up so you maximize the view.

Are the restaurants close by?

Carol G: They’re actually a little ways away, because you’re all the way at the front of the resort. The rest of the resort goes back behind that, so some of the restaurants are a bit of a walk, but not too far. The resort isn’t huge, it’s spacious and never feels crowded but it’s easily walkable to everywhere in a few minutes.

How big is the resort?

Carol G: It’s about 25 acres, which sounds large, but the way it’s put together, it feels very intimate and cozy, kind of boutique-y, with a private beach. It’s a very modern retreat, and it has a chain of pools that evoke its namesake, Dunn’s River Falls. I can’t say enough about the landscaping. Sandals does such a great job, especially at this resort, everywhere you go there are beautiful flowers, lots of greenery and trees. You feel like you’re in a private little resort of your own. There is one hill that is on the back-side, well I guess it’s the backside in terms of away from the ocean but it’s the front side of the resort in terms of where you arrive and the main lobby. Anyway, the spa and rum club and coffee shop and one of the restaurants, Zuka, are up there, it’s not a huge hill or long to walk, but noteworthy if you have mobility concerns. It’s all paved sidewalks of course. Otherwise the resort is flat.

What’s the atmosphere like at Sandals Dunn’s River in the evening?

Carol G: It is very romantic, the whole resort felt that way. Whether you’re having a drink at the rum club or dessert at the coffee shop, which we liked to do, it’s just beautiful. We were there in December, so everything was decorated for Christmas, with the decorations all through the resort reflecting the holiday. They had live music by the pool, or musicians playing an instrument as you walked by on the bridge. At night the jasmine smells so good, and I loved listening to the tree frogs singing once evening came. The stars are so close it feels like they’re right on top of you. It’s a wonderful place to walk around, enjoy your dinner, and then go for a drink afterward, or listen to the entertainment. It really is one of my favorite resorts. Sometimes they do beach parties with food stations set up and live music and fire dancers, it’s incredible.

What’s the airport transfer like when you stay at Sandals Dunn’s River?

Carol G: That, to me, is really one of the most important things. You fly in, you’re tired, you get to the airport, and you wonder how you get to Sandals. Well, at MBJ they have a Sandals lounge where you can get a drink and snack and hang out comfortably while you wait for the shuttle. I’ve never waited more than a few minutes though, they get you on the way very quickly. It’s always in an easy place to find. They’ll be waiting for you there and have your transfer ready, because your Travel Advisor has given them all your information ahead of time, so they know which flight you’re coming in on. And of course it’s always free of charge to and from the airport, though that driver can accept tips since they’re not on-resort staff. It makes it very easy to get to Sandals, they’re very organized. If you have a private transfer set up you’ll meet them there as well. The drive isn’t bad, it’s about an hour and a half depending on traffic, but it’s a straight highway so it’s not winding or anything. They generally ask the people on the shuttle if you want a rest break halfway for restrooms and food, you can get drinks or jerk chicken and take it with you. If you fly into Ian Flemming Airport it’s much shorter, but honestly the drive from MBJ isn’t bad. We’ve also had clients fly into Kingston, it’s about the same distance and not a bad drive either. Some of the other islands like St. Lucia can have pretty rough transfers if you’re prone to motion sickness so Sandals Dunn’s River is still a good option if that’s the case, even though the ride is a little on the longer side.

What are the best restaurants at Sandals Dunn’s River?

Carol G: They have 12 different restaurants, so you’re never without food, there are restaurants everywhere. There’s Caribbean, which is really yummy and we enjoyed, plus Greek, Italian, French, Asian, and Latin fusion. There’s the Dunn’s Rum Club where you can also get food, a pizza spot, and a seaside grill with really good seafood. There’s the Jerk Shack if you like Caribbean spicy chicken (they make it not too hot though, then you can add hot jerk sauce if you want), and a great sushi restaurant called Hanami. And there’s Blum, a wonderful coffee shop I would always visit. The Jamaican coffee is world class, so good, and the mocha lattes. I’d get an iced one in the morning and a hot one in the evening, and there’s so much more there, lots of sweets. Zuka, the Latin fusion restaurant, was our favorite out of all of them.

Along with the restaurants, there are nine bars and cocktail lounges, including a fun bubble bar where they have bubbles flowing out of the pool into the bar area, and a rooftop lounge, which is really cool. We went up there and had chocolate martinis, they were great and the view is incredible it’s at the top of one of the Tufa buildings. And the rum club is a lot of fun later at night, people really enjoy that. They have a lot of high-end aged rums you can try, you can do flights. No upcharge, all included, it’s amazing.

What’s the spa and activity scene like at Sandals Dunn’s River?

Carol G: I always try to get a massage whenever I go, they’re just wonderful, I’ve never had a bad one. I like the hot stone massages, and you can have them use a flower scent too, like jasmine or lavender. There’s also a plunge pool in there you can use without a reservation or extra cost as well as a cold plunge and hot tub side to side.

Beyond the spa, there’s plenty to do, pickleball, pool croquet, table tennis, chess, volleyball, shuffleboard, or you can get out on the water for sailing, paddleboards, water skiing, Hobie cats, snorkeling, and wakeboarding. Certified scuba divers get free dives, and if you’re a golfer, green fees at the Upton Estate Golf and Country Club are complimentary and unlimited, with free transfers to the course. There is a small cart fee and caddie fee, but it’s not bad. Usually $30 for the cart and $25 for the caddie. There are two pools, one more active, one quieter if you just want to relax, plus two whirlpools and a 24-hour fitness center.

What off-resort excursions are worth doing near Sandals Dunn’s River?

Carol G: There’s so much to do in the Ocho Rios area. You’re only about a mile from Dunn’s River Falls, which is a magical place everybody tries to get to. There’s a sunset catamaran cruise where you can snorkel, ATVing, a zip line, horseback riding on the beach, deep-sea fishing, and a dolphin encounter that a lot of people love. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Looking back, what makes Sandals Dunn’s River special?

Carol G: I don’t think I’ve been to a Sandals I liked as well as this one, and I’ve been to almost all of them. Here’s something a lot of people don’t know: for an additional cost, you can have a candlelight dinner set up in your room, on your balcony, or right on the beach at sunset. The sunsets there are just to die for. You can also book professional photos on the beach or in a garden, and rent a cabana for the day or the week if you want your own special spot. We went for a special birthday for me, and it made it one of the best vacations we’ve ever had. It is the perfect resort.

How does the O1B compare to other room categories at Sandals Dunn’s River?

Carol G: There are a few that are definitely more of an upgrade from the O1B, but ours was beautiful. If you want a straight-on beachfront view instead of the ocean and pool view, there’s a beachfront version of this same one-bedroom butler suite (room code B1B) in the Mammee Bay building for a little more, typically somewhere in the $1,800-a-night range. There’s also the Tufa Terrace Swim-Up One Bedroom Butler Suite (room code TSUP), which tends to run closer to $2,000 a night, and if you really want something exceptional, the Coyaba Sky Villa Swim-Up Rondoval Butler Suite (room code SKYV), a spectacular round villa with its own swim-up pool and private pool sanctuary, generally starts upward of $2,150 a night. That one’s the cream of the crop. If you’re interested in it, let us know, it sells out quickly.

So, who is the Dunn’s Mammee room really for?

Carol G: Honestly, anyone who wants a romantic, relaxing stay without needing to spend a fortune on the very top suites. It’s perfect for a honeymoon, an anniversary, or a big milestone, we booked it for my birthday, and it made the whole trip. You still get full butler service, two balconies, and two soaking tubs, so it feels special without needing to go all the way up to something like the Sky Villa. If you want the top-of-the-line experience, there are bigger upgrades at this resort, but if you want romance, comfort, and butler service at a more reasonable price point, this room delivers.
