The Coyaba Sky Villa is the top room at Sandals Dunn’s River, a stand-alone rondoval with no shared walls, its own private plunge pool, plus swim-up access to the connected pool right off the patio. The highlight is the private rooftop sky terrace which has a second soaking tub for two (on the roof!), a shaded sectional, a dining setup for private meals under the stars, and a telescope with a dedicated stargazing concierge who comes up in the evening to set it up for you if you want. Inside is a round, high-ceiling open layout suite with a king bed, a living room area, and a spa-style bathroom with double sinks and a soaking tub for two. How far away is Sandals Dunn’s River from the airport?

Susie C: Getting to Sandals Dunn’s River is fairly simple. It’s 90 minutes from the Montego Bay airport, or 20 to 30 minutes from the Ocho Rios airport, and I’m happy to help clients decide which airport is best for them. When we go to this resort, we always fly into Montego Bay, for two reasons. One, we can use the VIP airport service, which I can set up for you before you go. And we don’t mind the transfer. We use a private transfer service anytime we go to Jamaica, they’re dependable, they’re right outside the door once you get through customs and immigration, and they do a straight shot to the resort, or they’ll stop along the way if you want. The private transfer does cost extra. If you don’t want that option, the Sandals Lounge at either airport will set up a shuttle, which are small vans that hold maybe five to six couples. It’s not a windy road, generally smooth highway driving. it’s a beautiful view, and they will sometimes point out things on the island as you go, kind of a mini tour of the area. They’ll usually stop once along the way so everybody can use the restroom, grab something to eat or a beer, and you can bring that back on the shuttle.

What happens when you pull up to Sandals Dunn’s River?

Susie C: When you pull up to the Sandals Dunn’s River lobby, there will be Sandals employees waiting for you. They’ll hand you a cold wet towel to freshen up, make sure your luggage is offloaded and tagged so it gets to your room, and give you a complimentary drink, the resort’s drink special, a glass of champagne, or just water or a soft drink if you’d rather. With a butler room you go into the butler lounge, they introduce you to your butlers, and your butlers walk you to your room and check you in there. If you arrive early, you’re still welcome to use all the amenities. We usually pack a swimsuit and a few things in our backpack, and the butlers will walk you to lunch or to the pool or beach, sometimes even get you a private spot, and then come find you once your room is ready. And if you get there at 11 and they’ve got the room ready, they’ll let you check in, you don’t have to wait until 3.

How does the butler service work at Sandals Dunn’s River?

Susie C: About two weeks before your trip you’ll get a butler preference sheet from me, and I can help you fill it out. It asks your likes and dislikes, what you’d like in your room, and if you’re celebrating something and want reservations at a certain restaurant on a certain night, you put that on there. The butlers are pretty good about accommodating your requests before you even arrive. Then you sit down with them in your room and they go over the restaurant reservations, which they’ve usually already made, here’s Monday, here’s Tuesday, here’s Wednesday, but then you can switch them around if you want. They’ll reserve your pool and beach chairs, bring any meal you want anywhere, set up a private dinner in your room (though try to give them 24-hour notice), or bring breakfast to your patio or beach chair, whatever you want! If your family or friends are also in butler rooms, I can request the same butler team for everyone, and I have my favorite butlers at this resort that I can request for you too. One time I forgot my phone charger going from one resort to the other, and my butler drove into town, got me a charger, and brought it back. Obviously I tipped him generously and paid him for it, but that’s the kind of above and beyond stuff they’ll do for you. The butlers are amazing.

What are the best rooms to stay in at Sandals Dunn’s River?

Susie C: This is an amazing room, probably one of the top rooms at all the resorts because of all the amenities and extra things it includes. It’s the Coyaba Sky Villa Rondoval, and it’s the resort’s top category. What makes it special is the private rooftop, the private plunge pool, and the swim-up access, all in a stand-alone rondoval that’s just for the two of you.

Where exactly is the Coyaba Sky Villa on the resort?

Susie C: The Coyaba Sky Villa rondovals are all in a little village at the front of Sandals Dunn’s River. As you come down the long driveway, you’ll see these rooms right there before you get to the lobby, so they’re very close to the lobby, the spa, and the restaurants. But they sit back where they’re more private and very quiet, because you’re kind of blocked from the noise of the beach and the pools by a building, and the rooms are tucked into a private little garden area. So it’s very peaceful back there. Quiet and private. However if you want to be right on the beach or views are important, this probably isn’t the best room for you. It’s a tradeoff.

What’s the Coyaba Sky Villa like inside?

Susie C: The Coyaba Sky Villa rondovals are amazing. They’re all separate buildings with no shared walls with neighbors. These are swim-out, so when you walk off your patio you can go into your private plunge pool, which is also accessible from the bedroom area through doors, or into the swim-up pool, which is kind of like a lazy river connected to other rooms. But it’s pretty private right in front of your room, people aren’t going to congregate there, and it’s only shared with a few other rondovals, so it’s nice to have the option of either. The room itself has a very high ceiling, and it’s round, like the rondoval. The main area has a beautiful king bed, a little table and two chairs if you want to eat inside in the air conditioning, a little love seat facing the TV, and a small desk in case you need to set up a laptop. Around the corner from the bed, separated by a half wall, is the bathroom, with double sinks, a big shower, and a soaking tub for two. It’s a spa-like bathroom, it’s beautiful.

These are very new. When Sandals took this resort over, they redid all the rooms, and I believe they built these from scratch so they’re completely new buildings within the past couple of years.

And the Sky Villa rooftop, which you said is your favorite part?

Susie C: When you exit the Sky Villa, there’s a little rounded staircase that goes up to the top, and that’s the highlight, the deck, a huge private area on the rooftop. It’s like another living area, it’s huge. You’ve got another soaking tub for two that’s private, benches, a table and chairs if you want to have meals up there, which I would do a lot personally. The butlers will set up dinner and you can have a private meal on your rooftop. There’s a big sectional with a little hood you can pull up for shade, and an umbrella, and you can reconfigure it into more seating, so if you’re a bride and groom you could have your wedding party up there before or after, and the butlers will bring snacks and drinks. There’s also a telescope up there, and this is one of the perks of this room, a dedicated stargazing concierge for evening experiences. They come up, get the telescope out, and show you the constellations, which for me, not knowing how to use a telescope, haha, is a great perk. I probably wouldn’t have even used the telescope otherwise, but it’s really cool! It’s got a really nice view, you can see the pool lit up below at night, and they’ll set up candles for a candlelight dinner. Then you look out across all the vegetation around the rondovals.

Who is the Coyaba Sky Villa best for?

Susie C: A lot of honeymooners love this room, it’s private and really romantic, and couples celebrating an anniversary would love it too. One thing to keep in mind is there are the steps up to the rooftop, so for anybody who doesn’t like steps it might not be perfect, but otherwise it’s a good room for most anyone. It’s the most expensive room at the resort because of all the extra amenities and how beautiful it is with the private pool and the swim-out. And there are only five of these, and they sell out far in advance, so if it’s the room you want, book it sooner than later.

Is Sandals Dunn’s River worth it?

Susie C: There’s so much offered at the Sandals resorts, land and water sports, dining, entertainment, and it’s all included, so the value is wonderful. There’s a lot that comes with this room, it’s not just a room, it’s a whole experience. Sandals Dunn’s River is one of my favorite resorts within Sandals. I think it’s an excellent value given the level of luxury and all the stuff that’s included.

What’s the dining like at Sandals Dunn’s River?

Susie C: There are 12 restaurants, so you can’t go wrong. One of my favorites is Zuka, the Asian fusion restaurant, and it’s about a two or three minute walk from the Coyaba Sky Villas. You can get steak and lobster there, and all kinds of Latin and Spanish cuisine, so we’ve had some really interesting meals, things we normally wouldn’t try. But the thing is, too, I feel like they make things really accessible if you’re not used to different foods, unless you ask for it nothing is going to be ridiculously spicy, for example. The Jerk Shack is my husband’s favorite. They did an authentic Jamaican dinner where we sat outside and they brought a bucket with Red Stripe and different rums so you could make your own drinks, then the goat stew they’re known for. My husband discovered the lollipops there, a little chicken thing that’s not on the menu, but if you ask for it, it’s very good, he gets them every time. We also love the sushi restaurant, Hanami. It’s a tradition for us to go there our first night since it can be hard to get reservations that first night, and you don’t need reservations there. A lot of people go there for appetizers, then to another restaurant, then out to the food truck for dessert.

What is there to do at Sandals Dunn’s River, on the water and on land?

Susie C: On the water you can kayak, and at this one you can water ski and go tubing. Snorkeling is included and the boat goes out two or three times a day, we usually put our name on the list the day before, but you can usually just walk up. They’ll take you out on the Hobie Cats, or you can sail them yourself if you know how. You can paddleboard, kneeboard, there’s a glass bottom boat, you can wakeboard, and if you’re PADI certified you have unlimited diving. If you’re not certified and want to try, they offer a class for an additional fee, four hours in the pool and then one dive. On land there’s table tennis, pickleball, tennis, shuffleboard, bocce ball, beach and pool volleyball, which are fun to watch and get pretty wound up, board games, pool, and lawn chess you can stop and play as you walk by. The entertainment is every night and it rotates, a big courtyard setup, singers in the lobby, talent shows or a fire show on the beach, karaoke, and piano bars. And golf is included, Sandals has its own course, Upton Estate, you catch a shuttle and the green fees are free. I can help you with tee times. There is a cart and caddie fee, but it’s not too much, $55 total last time I checked. The caddies are super laid back and a lot of fun, just a forecaddie setup, nothing too formal.

What’s the vibe like at Sandals Dunn’s River?

Susie C: It’s a very romantic, peaceful resort, and the landscaping is gorgeous, you’ll get a whiff of night jasmine on an evening walk. A few things that make it special: in the morning you can go out to a beach chair and watch the sunrise, and they bring a coffee cart onto the beach and serve you coffee with freshly ground beans. At 8 o’clock every morning there’s someone up on the mezzanine playing the saxophone or violin, it’s so chill and relaxing, and you can sit and have coffee or breakfast and listen. That mezzanine also has a champagne bar, they do crafts up there, and it has beautiful ocean views with big beds you can sit on and look out. It’s a little less of a party vibe than Ochi, which makes it great for honeymooners and anniversaries, but it’s still active, I think just the right amount.
