The B1B is a beachfront, ocean-view butler suite in the Mammee Bay building on the north side of Sandals Dunn’s River, closest to the beach and pool. It’s a true one-bedroom, a separate bedroom plus its own sitting area, so one of you can nap while the other stays up, and the big draw is the large private balcony with a Tranquility soaking tub for two, a bistro dining set, and privacy curtains you can pull closed. Inside there’s a spa-style bathroom with dual sinks and a second soaking tub, and a fully stocked bar with premium liquor set to your preferences. Every stay includes two personal butlers, 24-hour room service, and all the luxury inclusions Sandals is known for. How far away is Sandals Dunn’s River from the airport?
Carol G: You fly into Montego Bay, and it’s about an hour and a half drive from Sangster International, or you can fly into Ian Fleming International near Ocho Rios, which is only about 30 minutes from Sandals Dunn’s River. There are direct flights now to Ocho Rios from Miami on American Airlines, which is nice. Most people still come into Montego Bay, and it’s a great airport. You go through customs, then right to the Sandals lounge, and they’ll be there with your name, your flight, and your transfer ready. Because the B1B is a butler suite, you get a private transfer over, and they’ll be waiting for you. The drive isn’t too bad, mostly highway, not too winding.
What’s the arrival experience like at the resort?
Carol G: It’s really great. They greet you when you first get there with a nice cool washcloth to wipe your hands and face, because Jamaica can be warm, and they have a drink waiting, usually a nice cold rum drink since rum is big in Jamaica. Last time they were even singing, having fun. Because this is a butler room, your butler checks you in, and they may not be there the second you arrive but they’ll come meet you, check you in, and walk you to your room, showing you the pools and restaurants along the way.
How do the butlers work once you’re settled in?
Carol G: You usually have two butlers, one in the morning and one in the evening, and they work from early until 10 o’clock at night, and after that you’ve got 24-hour in-room service. They give you a phone so you can reach them anytime. They’ll get your restaurant reservations, and my tip is if there’s a restaurant that needs a reservation, ask the moment you arrive, because the popular ones book up a couple of nights out. They’ll set up your chairs at the pool or beach, bring a cooler with whatever drinks you want, and bring an afternoon snack, we always ask for shrimp cocktail or coconut shrimp. Sometimes you come back and they’ve filled your tub with hot water and rose petals. They’re there to do whatever you want, but they’re not in your way, they have other clients too, so you use them as much or as little as you like.
What are the best rooms to stay in at Sandals Dunn’s River?
Carol G: There are a lot of great room types, but the B1B, the beachfront one-bedroom, is a wonderful choice, and it’s the room I’d point a lot of couples to. It’s a butler suite with a separate bedroom and sitting area, a large private balcony, and a straight beachfront and ocean view. If you want to spend a little more there’s a swim-up Rondoval Butler Suite, or a beachfront club level room with a beautiful oceanfront view, and at the very top there’s the Coyaba Sky Villa with a private pool. But for a full one-bedroom layout right by the beach, this one is hard to beat.
Where exactly is the B1B on the resort?
Carol G: It’s in the Mammee Bay building on the north side of the resort, closest to the beach and the pool, on the second to the sixth floor. It’s a beachfront and ocean-view building, so you’re taking in a spectacular view of the beach right from your balcony.
What’s the room like inside?
Carol G: It’s very large and really well put together, classy, sophisticated furnishings. It’s a true one-bedroom, so you have a separate bedroom with a great king-size bed and a big closet with a safe, robes, and slippers, plus a separate sitting area with comfortable sofas and chairs. There’s an HD flat TV in both the bedroom and the sitting area. The bar is fully stocked with premium liquor, which not every room category gets, and they’ll stock it with what you like, I like a certain red wine and they keep it there for me, plus whatever pop, water, or juice you want in the fridge, just tell your butler. The bathroom is spa-like and beautiful, with dual sinks, a walk-in shower, and a separate soaking tub inside, which is lovely if you want a warm bath after the beach. It’s really spacious too, there is plenty of room for two people to get ready at the same time.
Tell us about that balcony and the soaking tub for two.
Carol G: The balcony is large and very private-feeling, and it’s the romantic heart of the room. It has a bistro dining set, privacy curtains, and a Tranquility soaking tub for two. I’ll be honest, it’s not completely private, it looks out over the beach, so someone could walk by and glance up, but that’s exactly why the curtains are there, so if you want to get in the tub and have your privacy you absolutely can. It’s a very comfortable spot to sit out during the day or in the evening. We like having the butler bring lunch or snacks before dinner to the balcony after we come back from the beach or pool.
Is Sandals Dunn’s River worth it?
Carol G: I really think so. There wasn’t anything I didn’t like about Sandals Dunn’s River, and honestly I can’t say that about every resort. It’s more of a boutique resort, about 260 rooms, so it feels cozy and very romantic, with gorgeous landscaping, a private beach, and a chain of pools and little waterfalls meant to echo Dunn’s River Falls. It never really feels crowded to me and our other travel advisors say the same thing. So much is included, dining, entertainment, watersports, golf, that the value is wonderful. I’d go back without hesitation.
What’s the dining like at Sandals Dunn’s River?
Carol G: Between the two resorts there are 28 dining options, and 12 right here at Dunn’s River, so foodies can pick just about any kind of restaurant, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Only one restaurant needs a reservation and a dress code, the French restaurant, Amande, and even that is just “resort evening,” so that means long pants or nice jeans and maybe a button up t-shirt for the gentlemen, a sundress or nice pants for the ladies, no shorts though. Everything else is resort casual so as long as you’re not in a swimsuit or something pretty much anything is fine. Zuka, the Latin fusion spot, is one of my favorites it’s a romantic walk up in the evening. I love the Isola Pizzeria and the ice cream, and if you want authentic Caribbean you have to try the Jerk Shack at least once, it’s a little spicy but not too bad and it’s so good. I think they dull the spice down compared to what the locals eat but they have different sauces you can add to turn it up if you want haha. Blum, the coffee shop, is my favorite, up a little hill in the resort and just magical in the evening with lattes and pastries. There’s also Hanami for sushi, a seaside grill, Greek, Italian, you can’t miss. And there are 9 bars, including a rum bar with about 30 rums and the Ocarina rooftop lounge, which is a fun place to be up above looking out over the ocean. You can tell I really like the food at Dunn’s!
What is there to do at Sandals Dunn’s River, on the water and on land?
Carol G: On land, pickleball is big here, plus volleyball, shuffleboard, bocce ball, croquet, table tennis, and big lawn chess boards. On the water, if you’re a certified scuba diver you get two dives a day free, which I think is exceptional, and there’s snorkeling, a glass bottom boat, sailing and Hobie Cats, paddleboards, kayaking, and kneeboarding. All included. Golf at Upton Estate, green fees and transfers are free, you do have to pay for cart and forecaddie but it’s not much, I think $55 total, and the caddies are a lot of fun, super laid back.
The falls are about 10-15 minutes away, and it’s a great experience to walk up them, we’ve done it. For excursions like a catamaran cruise, a powerboat ride, or a dolphin encounter, we use Island Routes, and either your advisor or your butler can set those up.
What’s the vibe like in the evening?
Carol G: It’s got a lovely romantic vibe. The grounds are well lit and beautifully landscaped, there’s a little waterfall, and you can hear the tree frogs at night. There’s live entertainment day and night, themed evenings like a live band in the plaza, a Jamaican show, a beach party, an illusionist, or a fire show, so there’s always something going on. Walking around after dinner with the scent of night jasmine in the air we came across someone playing violin on a bridge and a saxophonist in the plaza, it was just really romantic. When we walked around at night the stars felt like they were right on top of you. It’s much more romantic and boutique than Sandals Ochi, which is more of a party place, so it comes down to what you’re after.
Is Sandals Dunn’s River adults only?
Carol G: Yes, it’s an all-adult resort, so no kids. That makes it a wonderful spot for honeymoons, anniversaries, and vow renewals, and it’s also great for a group, you could bring friends for something like a pickleball tournament, or hold a wedding here. It’s just a really great place to go, I think anybody would love Sandals Dunn’s River.
