The TB sits in the Travertine building at the very front of Sandals Dunn’s River, so it’s oceanfront with a front-row view over the pool, the beach, and the Caribbean. It’s a Club Sandals room, which means a dedicated concierge lounge for reservations and requests, and the big draw besides the view is the large private balcony with a Tranquility soaking tub for two. Inside it’s modern and spacious, with a spa-style bathroom that has a dual-sink vanity and a makeup table. Every stay includes a stocked bar with premium liquor set to your preferences, Club Sandals lounge access, and Red Lane Spa bath amenities. How far away is Sandals Dunn’s River from the airport?
Carol G: Sandals Dunn’s River is on the north coast of Jamaica, about an hour and a half from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. There’s also a newer airport near Ocho Rios only about 30 minutes away, and there are direct flights now to Ocho Rios from Miami, but most people fly into Montego Bay since it has more flights and is often less expensive. It’s not a bad ride at all. You go through customs, follow the signs to the Sandals lounge, and there are people waiting with your name, your reservation, and your transfer. All transfers with Sandals are free both ways. If you’d rather have a private car transfer, say for a wedding or anniversary, our travel advisors can set that up, there’s a cost for that, but the standard transfer is included.
What’s the arrival and check-in like for a Club Sandals room?
Carol G: When you pull up they have a wonderful group of people waiting with cool washcloths, because it can be warm, and a lovely cold rum drink. They take you into the air-conditioned main lobby, check you in, and have your luggage brought to your room. On the way to the room they point out the restaurants, pools, and activities so you get the lay of the land. Because this is a Club Sandals room, there’s a concierge lounge close to your room where you can make restaurant reservations or ask for anything you need. It’s a nice cool, quiet spot with cookies and drinks, and that’s also where someone meets you to walk you to your room.
What are the best rooms to stay in at Sandals Dunn’s River?
Carol G: With 260 rooms there’s a lot to choose from, and this Travertine Beachfront Club Level Room is a wonderful one, it goes for about $386 per person per night and you honestly can’t beat the view. If you want more space, the Mammee Bay beachfront one-bedroom butler suite is bigger and adds butler service, around $572 per person, and if you want to do something really special the Coyaba Villa Swim-up Rondoval Butler Suite with a private plunge pool is around $622 per person. They’re all lovely, you can’t lose. But for a front-row beach view at a club-level price, the TB is hard to beat. Excellent value in my opinion.
What can you tell us about the Travertine room itself?
Carol G: It’s in the Travertine building, which is the first building at the front of the resort, so you’re oceanfront looking out over the pool, the beach, and the Caribbean, it’s just a spectacular view, you can’t beat it. It overlooks one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in Jamaica. The balcony is large with a private Tranquility soaking tub for two, a bistro table, and curtains you can pull for privacy day or night. Inside it’s modern and spacious with a king-size bed, a stocked bar, an HD smart TV, and a nice sofa chair. The bathroom is spa-like with a walk-in shower, a dual-sink vanity, and a makeup table, which most rooms don’t have, so ladies, that’s a nice place for your products. There’s a safe, big closets, Red Lane Spa amenities I love so much I don’t bring my own, a hair dryer, and plush robes and slippers.
Carol G: One thing I will note is that some of the rooms are above a rooftop just below your balcony so you can see in my picture it’s not straight above the pool, but it wasn’t really an issue for me. If you book with us we can request specific rooms that have exactly what you want.
What’s stocked in the room, and how does the club level work?
Carol G: The refrigerator is stocked with juices, pop, and water, and there’s premium liquor and wine too. If there’s a specific wine or liquor you want, or a particular soft drink you like, you just ask down at the concierge lounge and they’ll get it for you. The concierge lounge is where you go to make your reservations and get any help you need, and they’re very accommodating, they just want your stay to be comfortable and easy.
Is Sandals Dunn’s River worth it?
Carol G: I absolutely love Dunn’s River and would go back in a heartbeat. It’s on 25 acres with 260 rooms, but it feels boutique, comfortable, and easy to get around, not crowded at all, and very romantic, it’s centered around a chain of pools and little waterfalls meant to mimic Dunn’s River Falls. So much is included, dining, entertainment, watersports, golf, that the value is wonderful, and the people in Jamaica are some of the kindest, most welcoming you’ll ever meet.
What’s the dining like at Sandals Dunn’s River?
Carol G: Between the two resorts there are 28 restaurants, and 12 right here at Dunn’s River, so if you’re a foodie you’ve got it made. There’s Caribbean, Italian, sushi, Asian, French, a seaside grill, Mediterranean, even South American, plus pizza that I loved for lunch. Zuka, the Latin fusion spot, is a favorite, the food is excellent. If you want real Caribbean, go to the Jerk Shack on the beach, it’s a little spicy but worth trying, and the grilled fish is great too. Blum Cafe is one of my favorite places for a latte and a pastry, morning or evening. Only one restaurant needs a reservation and a dress code, the French, La Amande, and even that is just resort casual-dressy, nice slacks and a polo for men, a sundress or nice slacks for ladies, no need for an evening gown. Everything else is resort casual. There are also 9 bars, including the Rum Club and a rooftop bar I really enjoyed for the sunset views, and they make wonderful drinks with or without alcohol, I often get a virgin pina colada or strawberry daiquiri.
What are the pools and beach like?
Carol G: There are five pools plus two river pools, again to resemble Dunn’s River Falls, and each one is unique. Some sit back in the resort, some are along the beach, which I love. One pool is lively with music, dancing, and pool volleyball, and another is quiet if you want to read a book or take a nap. The beach is beautiful, soft white sand that’s easy to walk, and the Caribbean is that turquoise blue everyone loves.
What is there to do at Sandals Dunn’s River, on the water and on land?
Carol G: If you’re a certified scuba diver you get two free dives a day, and there’s snorkeling with all the equipment provided, the snorkel boat goes out morning and afternoon. There are unlimited watersports, kayaks, paddleboards, and sailing, we love taking a Hobie Cat out. On land there’s pickleball, other land sports, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. Golf is free at Upton Estate Golf and Country Club nearby, green fees and transfers are covered by Sandals, you’d only pay for a cart and caddie (which isn’t too much). Off the resort there’s a lot with Island Routes, Dunn’s River Falls is about 15 minutes away and everyone should walk up it, plus catamaran cruises, ATV rides, horseback riding on the beach, a luminous lagoon experience, a dolphin encounter, and even bobsledding and zip lining. What’s the vibe like in the evening?
Carol G: It’s a very romantic resort, beautifully landscaped, and at night there are fire pits lit along the walkways. There’s live entertainment day and night, one evening there was jazz and a violinist, another a live band on the plaza, and they do themed nights, a beach party, a steel pan orchestra, a fire show, an illusionist. During the day there’s a saxophonist and a violinist playing on the bridge between the pools. We were there at Christmas and the decorating was fabulous, lights up the palm trees, and walking around at night the stars feel like they’re right on top of you.
Who is the Travertine room best for, and who isn’t it for?
Carol G: It’s great for anyone who’s a beach lover and wants the view and to be close to the beach and pools, you can’t go wrong. If you really want seclusion away from the activity, this room wouldn’t be your pick, you’d want something set further back in the resort like a Rondoval. And if you plan to spend a lot of time relaxing in your room looking out at the beach, I’d suggest the one-bedroom for the extra space. But if you love the view and the activity like I do, the Travertine is a beautiful choice.
