The HSUP South Seas Hideaway Swim-up, is a ground-floor butler suite at Sandals Royal Barbados, tucked at the very back of the property where the foot traffic is minimal. Sliding doors open onto a patio with a Tranquility Soaking Tub for two, a table and chairs, and privacy curtains. Step outside and you’re on a raised ledge with two loungers sitting in ankle-deep water, then it’s just a couple stairs down into the chest-high Crystal Lagoon swim-up pool. Partitions on either side keep it relatively private. Inside, a king-size bed and a seating area in a single open, spacious layout. Butler Elite service and 24-hour room service are included.
Sandals Royal Barbados sits right next door to Sandals Barbados, and one stay gets you both resorts. You can cross a sidewalk and be at an entirely different property with a whole other set of restaurants, pools, and entertainment. There’s a rooftop infinity pool and hot tub, a free four-lane bowling alley with a craft beer bar behind it, and a handcrafted donut shop you won’t find at any other Sandals. An Honest Review of the Sandals Royal Barbados South Seas Hideaway Crystal Lagoon Swim-up Butler Suite After Our Stay
All-Inclusive Expert Susie Christensen has personally stayed at every Sandals and Beaches resort. She and her husband have stayed at Sandals Royal Barbados multiple times, most recently in the South Seas Hideaway Crystal Lagoon Swim-up Butler Suite. We sat down with her to talk through the suite in detail and get her honest thoughts.
So you land in Barbados. What happens from there?
Susie C: You fly into Bridgetown, Barbados. You go through customs, then you go over to the Sandals area and they take it from there. You give them your name, they’ll take your bags, they’ll tag your bags, they’ll call your shuttle, and they’ll let you know when the shuttle arrives. You can have a snack or a drink if you have to wait, but you usually don’t wait long at all. They usually get you right on a shuttle.
How long is the ride?
Susie C: I want to say 15 to 20 minutes to the resort. So, very easy to get to. You go through part of the town, so you can kind of see the area a little bit on the way. Unless you’ve arranged a private transfer with us, Sandals provides the shuttle, and they set it all up for you at the Sandals lounge. You really just don’t have to worry about it once you get to the airport.
And when you pull up to the resort?
Susie C: They’ll meet you at the bus. As you get off, they hand you a cool towel and a glass of champagne, or their specialty drink, and then they get you set up in the butler lounge. This resort has a separate butler lounge, which is kind of nice, just for butler guests. And once you get into that lounge, they’ll take care of you from there. They’ll call your butlers, your butlers will meet you there, and your butlers will walk you to your room. They’ll give you a little tour on the way, and they’ll give you a tour of the room, show you the different things in the room. And then go over your preferences at that time. So it’s a really nice welcome, when your butlers meet you right away and then walk you to your room. And from there on out, your butlers are invaluable. Helping with whatever you need, anything you need, even things you don’t realize you need ha.
Where is this room on the resort, and what’s it like back there?
Susie C: I think the cool thing about this room, and everyone’s different, but when we stayed in this room we absolutely loved it, because it is at the very back of the property. It’s so quiet and peaceful back there. There’s actually a pool back there that not many people even know about, because most people go to the main pools in the front of the resort. It’s kind of its own secluded little pool for the two buildings that are back there. We would go out in the morning and hang out at it.
Is there anything else back there?
Susie C: There’s also two restaurants back there that a lot of people don’t know about. One of them is a healthy restaurant, it’s called Heart & Sol. And there’s also Green House. You can get smoothies, you can get healthy food. We would do a lot of meals back there because it was so close. We just walked right out of our building and it was right there. We didn’t even have to go to the main part of the resort.
I’ve heard people say there are monkeys? Is that something you actually see?
Susie C: There’s a little road that runs along the back of this building and along the back of the resort. We’d get up in the morning and go out and walk on that road, and there were actually wild green monkeys in the trees. We saw them one day running across the pool deck area right there outside of that pool. The monkeys are just fascinating, I love to watch them. And they’re not actually green, by the way. Their fur is more of a brownish grey with like a greenish yellow tint, and in the right light it just kind of looks green, so that’s what everybody calls them. So we would walk along the back of the resort, look for the monkeys, there’s all different kinds of birds in the trees. It was quiet and peaceful back there. I like that location for a lot of reasons.
How far is it to everything else?
Susie C: It’s not far. I mean, you’ve got the two restaurants close, but if you want to go over to the main part of the resort, I’d say it’s maybe a 5 or 10 minute walk. Not very far. And you can get to all the other options easily. The beach is about the same, maybe 5 to 10 minutes. There’s a sidewalk along the edge, so if you’re looking at a map, you just go right over to the sidewalk and it’s a straight shot to the beach. You don’t have to weave through the property, you just go right straight there. So not too bad at all.
Is that walk a downside for anybody?
Susie C: It can be, and I’ll be honest about that. If you’re the kind of person who likes to run back and forth to the room a few times a day, go to the pool, come back, change, go to the beach, come back, or if you have mobility concerns, the walk can add up. And if you want to step out your door and be right in the middle of the action, this isn’t the room for that. So maybe I wouldn’t recommend this room for those clients. You’re at the back of the property. So if you like quiet, and you like having your own pool right outside your patio, it’s perfect. We’d go to the beach in the morning and then come back and just swim and relax on our patio. We never felt like we were missing anything.
So let’s get into the room. It’s a swim-up, which is kind of special. What’s it like?
Susie C: It’s very special. The room is very spacious. It’s not a separate bedroom and living room area, call me and I can recommend other rooms if that’s what you’re looking for, but there’s a lot of room in there to move around. It doesn’t feel like a cramped hotel room, you know what I mean. You’ve got the king-size bed and then you’ve got a little seating area. It’s modern and updated.
And the patio…
Susie C: That’s what’s really awesome. Out there you have a Tranquility Soaking Tub for two, which a lot of Sandals rooms have, then you’ve got a table and two chairs, and there’s curtains that separate that from the swim-out part. So if you want to come home in the evening, which we did, we would come home, we would get in the pool, and then we would run the tub and sit in the tub, have a glass of champagne, or a snack that the butler brings, shrimp cocktail or something, and then get ready for dinner.
How does the swim-up actually work? Do you have to sit down and hang over the edge to get in?
Susie C: Once you go outside of that little area, you have a raised area in the water with two loungers, so you can actually sit in like ankle-deep water, sit on the lounger, easily step in there… splash water on you if you get hot. I like to read on those. And then you go down a couple stairs, and you’re actually in about a chest-high swim-up area. There are stairs and a hand rail into that part.
Is the pool shared?
Susie C: It is, it’s shared with everyone on the first floor, but there’s not very many rooms. Occasionally we would see someone swim laps, but other than that, we never saw anyone outside of our room in our swim-up area. Most people stay just right outside their rooms, and there’s partitions on either side. So it really feels private but you probably wouldn’t want to go in naked or anything like that haha. And because it’s back on the backside of the resort, there’s hardly any foot traffic back there. You don’t have people walking by on the sidewalks across from your swim-up.
You mentioned you have a favorite one of these rooms.
Susie C: I do. Another cool thing I can do for you, if you book with me, is I can request specific rooms, and in this category I have a favorite that we stayed in. The requests aren’t guaranteed, but they’re pretty good about honoring them. We know the staff by name and can get the requests to the right people. When we were there, we were lucky enough to get my fave.
What is butler service like at Sandals Royal Barbados?
Susie C: Your butlers meet you in the lounge at check-in and walk you to the room, and they go over your preferences right then. Restaurant reservations are a big one, especially Butch’s, which requires them. But really it’s anything you need. They’ll reserve your chairs at the beach in the morning and set you up with a cooler with whatever you want to drink in it. Happy hour, our butlers would bring us whatever snacks we wanted. Champagne. You’ve got 24-hour room service on top of that. From there on out they’re invaluable, even for things you don’t realize you need.
What’s a normal day with them look like?
Susie C: It kind of starts the night before. They’ll ask what your plans are, where you want to be in the morning, what you want for breakfast. Then in the afternoon, when we’d come back and get in our pool, we’d order appetizers, or they’d even just have them waiting without asking. The more you tell them about what you like, the more they can predict it’s pretty awesome. Our favorites are the coconut shrimp and the shrimp cocktail. They’ll bring a charcuterie board too, cheeses and meats and crackers, and they’ll chill champagne for you. Then in the evening they’ll walk you to dinner. And if they haven’t heard from you in a while, they’ll call you they give you a butler cell phone you can carry with you, see if you need anything. They get so good at predicting what you might want and what you like, which is so funny.
Then they’ll walk you to dinner so you don’t have to wander around looking for the restaurant you’re going to, seat you get your drinks walk through the menu with you, then they’ll hand you off to the server. It feels so classy.
How’s the food at Sandals Royal Barbados?
Susie C: There’s 21 restaurants between the two resorts, so you’re not going to run out of options. Butch’s is the steakhouse, and there’s actually two of them, one at each resort. That one does require a reservation, so have your butlers set it up early. And then like I mentioned, back where our room was, we had Heart & Sol and Green House right there. That was our go-to a lot of mornings because we didn’t even have to walk over to the main part of the resort.
Anything else worth trying?
Susie C: There’s a donut shop, Sweet & Salty’s, and they’re handcrafted donuts, I haven’t seen that at another Sandals. And there’s a French restaurant up on the rooftop by the pool, which is a really nice spot in the evening. Schooners is the outdoor seafood place, and people rave about that one. Between the two resorts you’ve got French, Asian, Italian, pan-Caribbean, and a couple of steak options, so you’re covered no matter what you’re in the mood for. Sandals always has really high quality food in my opinion, compared to a lot of the other all-inclusive brands it’s miles ahead.
What else is there to do at Sandals Royal Barbados?
Susie C: There’s a rooftop pool with a hot tub, and it’s an infinity pool, so it looks out over everything. There are cabanas up there, first-come first-served, so if you want one you’ve got to get up there early. There’s a bar up there too, and they make a chocolate martini that I’m still thinking about.
What about the bowling alley?
Susie C: That’s a fun one. Four lanes, and it’s free, it’s all included. There’s a craft beer bar right behind it, and an arcade and a sports area. So if you get a rainy afternoon, or you just want to do something different at night, that’s a good option. And they do entertainment on the outdoor stage in the evenings.
What’s the beach like?
Susie C: Well, something you should know about Barbados…the water on this side of the island can get choppy. It’s a more active beach, so it’s beautiful but it’s not always calm swimming. If you want calm water, I’d take one of the snorkel trips (which are included). They shuttle you over to a calmer spot, and honestly that’s the better way to swim and snorkel anyway. That’s definitely something to consider if you’re debating between Sandals in Barbados or another island. If you work with me I can have quick chat about all the factors on your trip and recommend the best options and find the best prices for you, but yeah, if you’re wanting to be in the ocean all day every day in flat calm waters, this might not be the best resort for you.
What’s worth doing off the resort?
Susie C: I tell all my clients, you have to go on an island tour. It’s amazing. They take you over to the other side of the island where you can snorkel with turtles, which I highly recommend, and you can snorkel over sunken ships where you’ll see tons of fish. Then they take you through the farmland, out to other beaches that are spectacular, and they’ll even take you to lunch. We picked a place that sat up on a cliff, and while we were sitting there a mother and baby whale went by. The water’s crashing on the beach way down below and it’s an open-air restaurant, so you’re just looking out over the water while you eat. Highly recommend it.
Barbados is also where Rihanna is from, and her childhood home is there, so on the tour we went on they took us right by where she grew up. And then on the weekends there’s a fish fry in town, Oistins Fish Fry. I think it’s about $25 to get there, and I can book that ahead for you, then you buy whatever you want to eat once you’re there. There were fishermen cleaning their fish and turtles coming right up to the dock. We had the most amazing fish dinner, and the lobsters were about as big as my arm.
Anything to know about booking those?
Susie C: Barbados draws a lot of visitors from the UK, so the tours and the popular restaurants fill up. Talk to us as far ahead as you can and we’ll get it locked in.
When did you go?
Susie C: December the first time, and I think November the second time. The weather was beautiful both times.
Who should book the South Seas Hideaway swim-up, and would you stay in it again?
Susie C: I’d definitely stay in this room again. It’s one of the top rooms we’ve ever stayed in, and we’ve stayed in a lot of them. It’s for the couple who wants quiet and privacy and their own pool right outside the door. If you want to be in the middle of everything, all the activities and music and such, this isn’t it. But if your idea of a good day is the beach in the morning and your own pool all afternoon, that’s exactly what this room is. We’d come back around two and just stay put. And then after dinner we’d get in the pool again at night, there are lights in it so you can do a nighttime swim. Very relaxing. Overall this is one of my top three rooms I’ve ever stayed in and I’ve been to every Sandals and Beaches resort, most of them multiple times. Excellent value for swim-up and butler room and I love Barbados itself. If you want to discuss it further, call me!
